Bat Dream Interpretation and Meaning

Share

The bat as a symbol has been associated with words like rebirth, intuition,  communication, inner depth, initiation, and illusion. For most people, bats have a negative connotation – mostly learned from vampire movies –  so a dream of a bat tends to inspire feelings of fear.

Native Americans, however, view the bat as an interconnected part of all creation, and the symbols attached to it typically involve intuition and vision. These associations are based on the fact that bats are very sensitive to their surroundings in nature. Native Americans might invoke a bat spirit if they needed special energy, such as the ability to “see” clearly and identify illusions or ambiguity in a matter, going straight for its core truth.

Bats symbolize rebirth because they live in cave-like environments and come out in the evening, effectively being “reborn” every night from within Mother Earth. Native Americans considered the bat to be a symbol of communication because bats have strong family ties and are extremely nurturing and social creatures. They are very sensitive to the other members of their group and constantly communicate with them. A dream of a bat suggests issues associated with free will and freedom as well, since bats can fly!

The dream bat indicates that you are very aware of the things that surround you in your environment and that you may be overly sensitive to the feelings of other people in your life. It also suggests that you are blessed with psychic perceptions and may have prophetic dreams. A bat’s appearance in your dream means you should make a greater effort at self-improvement and work on your spiritual and psychic education, perhaps confronting things that might be “scary” for you. If you follow the dream bat’s suggestion, you’ll be on your way toward your highest potential.

On the negative side, a bat dream is symbolic of the darker side of your personality. It may mean that you are relying on your intuition more than your logic – that you might be “blind” to certain things. To dream of a bat means that you should let go of old habits, evaluate facts more closely in a given situation so you don’t go “batty” or “crazy.” In some cultures, a dream of a white bat means the death of a family member, while dreaming of a black bat indicates you will face some personal catastrophe. And dreaming of a vampire bat indicates that you are being “drained” of your self-confidence or resources. If you see several bats in your dream, it could mean that you are worrying about your debts.

  • Hi,

I was dreaming of a very fragile baby bat that I found. At first I feared it would bite me as I allowed for it to cling to my hand. But then I placed the bat in my purse for a moment and it fell out into a very cluttered room. I was so worried about killing it with the digging about this room in looking for it. The room was a huge mess with boys basket balls rolling out of back packs onto the floor. I could not find the little guy and the room was a mess.

Thank you for your thoughts Aubry.

    • Hi Kelly,
It's really strange, but I had a dream kinda like yours. I had found this tiny baby bat and I wanted to protect her, so I had been keeping her in this little wooden treasure chest, seeing as she couldn't fly yet and I was traveling. But at one point I accidentally shut the lid on her wing and was terrified that I hurt her. It was really scary, but she seemed ok. My dream ended up being mostly about me accommodating the bat. I bought her a better cage with a log she could hang upside down on, etc. But when I woke up I was actually really sad that she was gone :(

      • Same here! I dreamt of finding a baby bat in a house and trying to keep it safe in a box to take it outside. At one point it flew into a medicine cabinet in a bathroom and I closed the door to trap it in there so it would calm down and I accidentally closed the door on its wing for a second. Haha - these three dreams of trying to care for this baby bat are so similar, I wonder what these mean specifically.

  • I had a dream of a white bat being born from an egg. When it hatched I kept it warm in my hands. When it was strong it flew away. Then it came back to me and snuggled on me showing me love. I awoke when the snuggly bat was hugging me.

    • That sounded pleasant. Mine was a vampire bat flying directly above my chest while I was laying on my back. Which how I was sleeping. I wasn't afraid though...just stared at it in awe. Then I woke up. It was so close to my face...that's what startled me.

  • My bat flew in my hair, it somehow got into my room while I was sleeping, while I was in bed it got into my hair I started screaming "get it out" and my dad ran in with my brother and everyone was laughing including me because we couldn't get it out of my hair it was flapping everywhere...kinda funny but I still woke up a bit startled.

  • Ok I need help with this please!! I Just woke up from a dream that there was a black bat flying around in my room and i remember it landed on my headboard and I noticed it was a black kitten with wings and it was dark in my room. Someone killed it and I turned the light on and stepped on it only to find it was a green lizard. It woke me out of a sleep and made me nervous enough to look it up. Help?!

  • I've been searching everywhere for a more comprehensive analysis of bats in dreams, but haven't found much so I'm going to describe my dream here and hope that someone can get back to me with a potential interpretation (:
In this dream I kept on seeing dead bats. I found a dead bat on the street, I accidentally killed a bat myself, I found a dying bat that I tried to nurture back to health but died anyways... Oddly enough, this dream came coupled with another dream in which I was lovingly repotting my favorite citrus plant, but it was all happening from the perspective of my mother. I (aka my mother) was telling the plant that these roots will always be welcome in this pot. Maybe it's a simbol that I broke my old habits and am ready to grow, but I felt a lot of frustration and sadness over these dead bats but 'm not too sure.
    Any thoughts?

  • My dream was of a brown bat. It was like he was trying to guide me. I was laying on my stomach in a field and he was hovering over my head. I wasn't afraid, it was like a good thing. Than a voice said don't let it get in your hair you will in injure it when you are trying to get it out. So the bat and I were able to maintain our distance while staying close. What does that mean?

    • Finally! A dream similar to mine... My bat was also brown, I was walking in a field though, which was peaceful at first... Initially I thought it was a butterfly. When I put my hand out so I can catch it on my fingers I heard a voice say “it’s a bat!” And the next thing I knew it attached to the back of my head - The voice told me not to take it out of my hair for the same reason - I would hurt it. I didn’t listen though and kept trying to get it out of my hair and off my head, but that only caused the wings to crumble in my hands and fly away. The bat though seemed to get larger and never let go. I woke up in a panic, and could still feel it (the bat) on that area of my head all day. It’s like the pressure of something resting on the back of my head is still there.

  • I dreamed that someone had opened the chimney flume and bats came into my home and they took me up into the sky, high above my house and the City. I was feeling like --if they let me go I'm going to die but they didn't let me go. They just carried me away and sat me down lightly in a big open green pasture .
