Suffocation Dream Interpretation and Meaning

Suffocation Dreams Leave You Breathless

You can’t breathe. It feels as if a wet, hot blanket or cloth is pressing down on your face. You thrash about and can’t get even a whisper of cool air. Panic soon sets in. You can’t get a breath and lights start to flash in your field of vision. You are suffocating.

This kind of dream is unpleasant in the extreme. If you have a dream about suffocation, it is time to wake up and listen to your unconscious. Your intuitive self is trying to tell you something. A suffocation dream is nothing if not a warning. It can mean that you feel trapped in a relationship that is extremely controlled and protective and you are feeling smothered. You want to get out.

You may be feeling restricted in your job, family, or even your friendships. You might be suffering from anxiety which is crippling you in your sleep. You may be able to keep it in check while you are awake but when you are in the relaxed state of sleep; your mind is trying to deal with your struggles. A feeling of anxiety can be, for many people, an actual search to grow and improve. However, the idea of changing oneself is constricting and causes the anxiety. You can change and improve your life.

This dream should serve as a warning to you. You are in a situation (or several) that is hurting you. Whether it is a bad relationship, bullying at work or school, or social anxiety, you need help. A trusted friend, family member or even a trained professional can help you, depending on how extreme your feelings of anxiety are. What’s important is to talk to someone. You may find that you are not the only one feeling this way, and united you can do something about it.

  1. sometimes we ignore some of the feelings or things that we do not want to think about deep enough when we are conscious. so it’s like the our mind is working for us when we are not in control of it while sleeping. Good Article.

I was sleeping and I was having a hard time breathing felt like I was losing oxygen and suffocating, and I was trying to get her attention by tapping her or scratching her. It got her attention but yet she wasn’t helping me. She was just watching me suffocate. Totally weird not the first time I’ve had this dream. First time I had this dream of me Havin a stroke and she was just standing there not helping. I don’t know but would like some type of answer

    • I’ve been having the same dream about my partner. I had tried to ignor it but it seems that I sometimes started feeling the same way even while awake (I understand of course that while awake I’ve been consiiu not to suffocate. But the emotion is the same at its core). I’ve come to realise my relationship was/is nocive. I have decided to get out of it and that becomes a tricky part due to commitments and bumps on the road. But i unfortunately believe that perhaps th only way to get back into control of my own mind is by stop placing who once had relevance in my life as important anymore.

  3. I had a dream that I was in space fixing a satellite. There seemed to be a malfunction with the suit at the time and then the oxygen tank was half full/empty and I just gave up and let go. I don’t know why I let go but I did anyway. So when I was floating deep in space I lost oxygen over time. I felt very dizzy and couldn’t breathe and I wanted the suffocating to stop but it didn’t. I closed my eyes and then I saw a very bright light. After that I woke up. I would like an answer please why this is has happened.

  4. I just woke up from a suffocation dream less than five minutes ago. It wasnt just a suffocation dream. I was running away from something in my dream. All of the sudden i came to this hallway with no end in sight on either side. I started to run one way then i feel like i was restricted and my head was pulled back. I then woke up but i could barely open my eyes and i couldnt move at all. I couldnt breathe and it felt like my covers where over my mouth. This was the scariest thing that has ever happened to me. It litterally feels like youre going to die right at that very moment

  5. I fall in a deep sleep, I wake up and I’m being smothered, felt like something had something over my nose and mouth. This happened 3 times in a row the other night. I was so afraid to go back to sleep. So now I try to stay awake at night and sleep during the day which it doesn’t happen doing the day. Plz. Help. Dee

  6. These answers mean nothing to me! In my dream I’m not in any particular place. I’m just lying there, panicking and not being able to breath in! It’s bloody scary and I’m genuinely worried that it’ll kill me one day! It’s not an “emotional” thing, it’s just physical! Has anyone else had annoying like that?
